Had a green operator talk me out of my safety checklist habit

Kid right out of school told me I was wasting time running through my pre-op checklist on paper instead of in my head. Said he could have his crane running in 3 minutes flat. I let him show me and he missed a worn cable that could have snapped on a 12 ton pick. Guess who's sticking with paper now? Anyone else have young guys try to shortcut the basics?

Oh man that reminds me of this kid we had fresh out of trade school who tried to tell me my way of taping up extension cords was outdated. Said I should just use those twist-lock connectors. First time he tried it on a wet jobsite his whole rig tripped the breaker and he spent an hour drying out connectors with a heat gun while the rest of us watched. Some habits exist because they work, not because theyre cool.
