Old timer told me to grease the boom pins every 40 hours

A retired operator named Dutch told me at a job site in Tacoma that skipping boom pin grease ruins the bushing pockets over time, and I thought he was just being dramatic. After running a rough demo job for 2 weeks without doing it, the boom started making this grinding pop on every swing that cost me half a day to diagnose. Do you guys stick to a strict grease schedule or just hit it when it sounds off?

Man, that story hits close to home. It's funny how the boring maintenance stuff is always the stuff that bites you later. I've noticed the same pattern with everything from my truck to my kid's bike chain, you skip the little 10 minute job today and it becomes a whole afternoon project next week. Dutch wasn't being dramatic, he was just speaking from a place of having learned that lesson the hard way, probably more than once. My rule now is if the manual says do it, I do it on the schedule, not when my ears tell me something's wrong. Take it from a guy who's spent way too many Saturdays fixing things that would've been fine with a little regular attention.
