Rant: Almost dropped a 3-ton AC unit last Thursday because of a bad sling angle

I was setting a rooftop unit at a strip mall in Bakersfield. Loaded it up, got the choker around it, but the shackle was binding weird on the pad eye. I should have stopped and re-rigged it right there. Instead I just gave it a tug to seat it. The angle pinched the sling and it started slipping sideways. I got lucky and set it down on the curb before it flipped. How often do you guys actually stop and re-sling when something feels off on a pick?

Did you actually feel the pinch before you tugged it?

Oh wow, I actually have to totally disagree with you on this one! I always yank first and ask questions later (it's the only way to get a clean pull without hesitating and losing your grip). If you pause to feel for the pinch, you're already second-guessing yourself and that's when you end up with a half-tugged mess. Think about it like ripping off a band-aid you know? The faster you commit, the less time your brain has to register the discomfort. I've ruined so many good knots by overthinking the pinch, so now I just go for it and adjust after.
