A guy at my local writing group read my opening line out loud and I have not written the same since
I brought the first draft of a short story to the Thursday group at the library on 5th, and when Dave read my first sentence aloud, I heard how clunky it was before he even finished. Now I read every first line out loud in my kitchen before I keep going, and it catches about 4 bad ones out of 5. Does anyone else do a read-aloud pass this early, or do you wait until the draft is done?
Started doing the exact same thing after my buddy roasted my opener at a coffee shop reading lol. Now I mutter every first line while making coffee and it's wild how many just die in the air. Saves me so much editing later, better to catch it early than rewrite the whole thing around a bad hook.
