Stopped rewriting in my head and started reading my first drafts out loud, and yeah it actually helps

I kept getting stuck editing the same opening paragraph of a short story for 2 weeks until my roommate jokingly said it out loud for me and I heard the clunky parts instantly. Does anyone else read their messy drafts out loud, or do you have another trick to catch what sounds off?
