Finally stopped writing dialogue like a robot after 12 drafts
I kept formatting every conversation with perfect grammar and full names, like "Hello, Sarah," said John. Then I read a prompt response where someone wrote "dude, you seeing this?" and it hit me. Real people interrupt, mumble, and skip words, so I tried leaving in some of that mess. My last short piece about two friends at a diner in Cleveland finally felt alive because I let one character trail off mid sentence. It's not about fancy rules, it's about making the reader hear a voice. Anyone else struggle with unlearning that stiff dialogue habit from school essays?
