PSA: I got 30 prompt ideas in one sitting by flipping the POV to the villain's mom
I kept hitting a wall every Sunday trying to come up with fresh story starters, so last week I tried something new. Instead of asking what the hero wants, I wrote every idea from the point of view of someone who loves the bad guy, like his mom, his ex, or the neighbor who feeds his cat. Sitting at my kitchen table in Boise for 40 minutes, I got 30 prompts out of one boring revenge plot. My favorite one so far is a mom who keeps baking casseroles for the detective hunting her son, and she never once lies to his face. Has anyone else tried flipping the POV like this, and what role gave you the weirdest results?
Does the villain's dog count? I wrote one from the point of view of the evil wizard's old dog waiting by the door every night, and it turned into a whole story about loyalty and not knowing what your owner does all day. Way sadder than the actual revenge plot. Also tried the bad guy's barber, who notices he flinches whenever someone says his brother's name. That one wrote itself.
