Question about choosing archetypes over plot outlines

I used to swear by detailed plot outlines, but a prompt last Tuesday forced me to pick between a rigid outline and a simple hero's journey archetype. I went with the archetype and the story basically wrote itself, has anyone else ditched outlines for character-driven structures?

Wait, aren't archetypes and character-driven structures kind of the same thing? The hero's journey is still a plot outline, just a looser one, right?
