Rant: I spent $40 on a 'prompt idea generator' app and it was a total waste

I was stuck for ideas for a fantasy story and bought this app that promised to give me hundreds of unique writing prompts. It just gave me the same five basic ideas reworded slightly, like 'a hero finds a magic sword' over and over. Has anyone found a better way to get past a creative block that doesn't cost money?

Creative block" sounds like a fancy way to say you're just bored. Go for a walk or watch a dumb movie instead. Spending money on it is the real problem.

Ha, fair point but I read somewhere that creative block is actually your brain hitting a pattern recognition wall not just boredom lol. A walk might help but I've found watching a documentary about something totally random works way better than trying to force the same old habits. Still agree about wasting cash though, most paid solutions are just preying on frustrated people.

Yeah but sometimes a walk doesn't cut it, @henry101. I mean, when you're stuck on a real project with a deadline, that "bored" feeling is pure panic. Idk, for me it's about changing the input, like looking at art books totally outside my style. Spending money on a course can be a trap, but sometimes a cheap tool you've never used can actually kickstart something new.
