That writing prompt about a locked room mystery at a writers conference changed my whole approach

I was at a small workshop in Portland last month. The leader handed out a prompt about a murder at a hotel where every suspect had an alibi. I had been stuck writing the same detective type story for years. This forced me to think about timing and logistics instead of motives. Now I set a timer for 20 minutes and just pick a location. Has anyone else had a single prompt knockout their writers block for good?

I don't know, relying on a single prompt to fix writer's block feels like a crutch to me... you're just trading one formula for another, not really learning to work through the hard parts. The best stuff I've written came from grinding through the rough spots without shortcuts, building that muscle to push past the block on your own terms. Prompts can be fun for a day, but they don't teach you how to find your own way out when you're staring at a blank page with no hotel alibi to lean on.
