The "opposite day" plot trick saved my novel from a total rewrite
I spent 60,000 words building a romance where the leads kept missing each other, but beta readers said it was boring because nothing happened. On a whim I swapped the core conflict to making them stuck together instead of apart, and suddenly every chapter had tension. Has anyone else tried flipping your central premise as a fix instead of deleting pages?

Switch that up completely. The whole "missed connections" trope is good but only if you can make it really hurt and it sounds like you couldn't get enough conflict out of it. The fix is actually pretty simple once you realize your plot is a single gear away from working right. Swap the obstacle from them being kept apart to them being forced together and suddenly every scene has friction because they have to deal with each other constantly. Works especially well if your characters have opposing goals or personalities that would naturally clash when stuck in close quarters. Had a buddy do the same with a mystery plot where the detective kept losing clues, flipped it so the killer kept leaving them on purpose, and the whole thing snapped together.
