Tried writing a horror prompt based on a local legend in my town...

I wrote a story about the 'crying woman' near the old railroad bridge and posted it on a prompt thread, but instead of scary reactions, three people commented saying they actually heard her crying last week. Now I'm wondering if my writing accidentally started a creepypasta or if this town is just weirder than I thought... has anyone else had a real local story blow up like that?

Maybe they're just messing with you to keep the legend going. People do that all the time, especially if they know you're writing about it. My uncle tells this story about the ghost of a farmer who walks the old dirt road near his property every Halloween. One year he wrote a little post online about hearing footsteps, and suddenly like four neighbors were all posting about seeing the farmer too. Turns out they were all just trying to get their kids to stay inside at night because there was a pack of coyotes hanging around. Same thing happens with that Slenderman nonsense or the Mothman - a few people hype it up and then everyone jumps on board because it's fun to pretend. Odds are those three people just saw your story and wanted to be part of the spooky club.

Pretty much. Internet legends are just peer pressure with better lighting.
