A guy at the Credit Union in Boise talked me out of closing my oldest card and I finally get why
I went into my credit union branch in Boise two weeks ago ready to close my first credit card. It only has a $500 limit and I never use it, so I figured it was doing nothing for me. The guy helping me pulled up my report and showed me that card was 11 years old, way older than anything else I have. He explained that closing it would cut my average account age almost in half and my score could fall 30 to 40 points. I always assumed old unused cards were dead weight, but he said that history is basically the backbone of my file. So now I buy one coffee a month on it and pay it off right away. Has anyone else kept a card open just for the age and did it actually help your score much?
