Back in 2015, I dropped $300 on a 'credit repair' service that was a total scam
I was young and my score was stuck in the low 600s, so I got desperate. They promised to 'dispute everything' and get my report clean in 90 days. All they did was send a bunch of generic letters to the bureaus that got instantly rejected. It actually made things worse for a bit because the disputes looked frivolous. Anyone know a legit way to fix errors without getting ripped off?

My 2018 version of that was a $400 lesson.

Oof, that $400 number hits hard, @olivia478. I had a similar thing happen with a phone repair that cost me almost three hundred. The real lesson is to always get a second quote, even for stuff that seems small. It feels like a hassle at the time but saves so much regret later. I'm way more careful about just saying yes to the first price now.

Yeah, the "dispute everything" line is such a red flag. I tried doing my own disputes with a free template I found online and it actually worked on a few old medical bills. Maybe it's just me but doing it yourself feels way less sketchy.
