I used to think checking my credit score would hurt it, so I never looked
For years, I avoided checking my own credit report because a friend told me it would cause a hard inquiry. I finally read up on it last month and learned about soft pulls. I signed up for a free service through my bank, Discover, and saw my score was 680. Now I check it every month to track my progress. Has anyone else had a similar fear about checking their own score?

Honestly, the whole credit score obsession feels a bit overblown sometimes. Like, yeah it's good to know your number, but people act like checking it is this huge life event. It's just a soft pull, no big deal. I get being careful, but fearing to even look at your own info seems a bit much. It's not that serious.

My buddy got denied for an apartment last year because his score dropped 40 points from a hard pull he forgot about. I used to think like you, but seeing that happen made me check mine every month now. It's not about being scared, it's about avoiding real life problems that pop up out of nowhere. Landlords and banks take that number way more seriously than we do, so it's worth keeping an eye on.
