My credit card company lowered my limit out of nowhere and my score tanked 40 points

That's brutal, classic credit card company move. They do that when they get nervous about the economy or your spending pattern. Happened to my buddy last year, same exact thing. Call them and ask why, sometimes you can get it reversed.
