My uncle in Fresno swore closing a card would tank his score, then he did it anyway
His score barely moved because it was a store card with a $500 limit and he had 6 other accounts keeping his average age up. Anyone else watch a relative panic over credit advice that stopped being true years ago?
My mom did the same thing with a department store card back in 2019. She had this whole speech ready about how her credit was ruined and she'd never buy a house. Turned out she had like nine other cards and the store one was barely a blip. What got me was she'd been carrying that worry around for YEARS, like a little pebble in her shoe, all because some guy at the register told her closing accounts was bad. She still brings it up at Thanksgiving like she survived something.
