Paid $40 for a credit monitoring service that did nothing I couldn't get for free

I signed up for CreditKarma Plus last month thinking the paid version would give me real updates on my score changes. Turns out it just showed me the same VantageScore I already see for free and locked my Equifax report behind another paywall. Has anyone else wasted money on these premium services before realizing they're useless?

Funny you mention that. My husband Walt got roped into a similar thing with some identity theft protection service after he had a small fraud issue on his debit card. It was supposed to alert us to any credit inquiries or new accounts opened in his name. First alert we got was an email saying our credit was frozen - turns out the service itself had frozen it as a "precaution" and we had to pay extra to unlock it for a simple home improvement loan we needed for our house. Felt like we paid for a service that just created more problems.

Credit monitoring is basically paying someone to tell you nothing.
