PSA: Paying off a collection account might not help your score right away
I was at a barbecue last weekend and my buddy Dave, who works at a bank, told me he saw people pay off old collections and their scores actually dropped. He said the account updates as paid but the negative mark stays for years sometimes. Has anyone else run into this where settling an old debt made things worse?
