Got talked out of gasket mount by a sound test at a meetup

Went to a local meetup in Austin last Saturday and someone had a tray mount board with PE foam that sounded way better than my gasket build. They said it's all about the plate material and how you tune the flex, not just the mount style. Now I'm pulling apart my build to try a polycarbonate plate, anyone else flip their stance after hearing something in person?
