My buddy convinced me that plateless builds actually feel better after I swore by brass plates for 2 years straight.

He let me try his fully built keyboard with no plate at the last meetup, and the gasket bounce combined with how quiet the switches were made me instantly want to convert my current project board has anyone else found a preference switch that completely changed how you build?

Nah man, swapping to a plateless build ain't gonna rewrite your whole typing experience or anything. Tried one out at a meetup too, felt like the switches were just floating around with zero structure and it drove me nuts. The gasket bounce just made everything feel loose and mushy, not some magical upgrade. Bet that "natural sound profile" stuff is just placebo, like people hearing differences in cables. Brass plates still give you that solid, consistent feel that plateless just can't match, especially if you're a heavy typer. Maybe your buddy's switches were just that clean or the board was tuned perfectly, not the lack of a plate doing the work.

Saw a thread on Geekhack where someone was saying plateless builds actually give you more of the switch's natural sound profile, like the housing material matters way more without a plate damping everything. That got me curious enough to try an FR4 half plate on my last build and it was a nice middle ground, still some structure but way more flex than brass. What switches were you running in that plateless board your buddy had?
