My friend told me to skip the plate foam and just use the case foam

He said it would make the sound deeper and save me money, so I tried it on a budget 60% build. The board ended up feeling hollow and the keys sounded thin, like cheap plastic. After two days I took it apart and put in a 3mm PE sheet from Stupid Foam, and the difference was huge. Has anyone else found that plate foam really does matter more than they thought?

Tried that on a cheap TKL and had the same hollow sound. Ended up cutting some shelf liner to fit under the PCB, which helped a ton. It's not perfect but it made the typing feel way more solid.

Oh man, I was totally in the "just use case foam" camp for the longest time. Thought it was all basically the same. But then I tried a build without any plate foam and it just felt... cheap and rattly, exactly like you said. Adding that thin layer back in made everything feel so much more solid and dense. It really is a night and day difference for how the whole board feels.
