Overheard a guy at a coffee shop say Gateron Yellows are overrated

I was waiting for my order last Saturday and this dude in a custom board shirt tells his friend that Gateron Yellows are basically just hyped up entry switches. He said he swapped to some random brand I'd never heard of and it changed his whole typing feel. It got me thinking, I've been using Yellows for like 2 years because everyone says they're the best budget linears. But maybe I'm missing out on something better for my next build. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized you were just following the crowd with a popular switch choice?

Ha, funny how one random dude at a coffee shop can make you second-guess two years of switch loyalty. Thing is, maybe the hype around Yellows is more about them being a solid baseline than actually being the best for anyone's personal preference. Sometimes the crowd is right about a good starting point, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go try ten different switches at a meetup before your next build.

That "solid baseline" thing hits the nail on the head. I see it everywhere, not just in keyboards. People latch onto whatever is the safe, decent option and call it the best because it works for most folks most of the time. It's like how everyone recommends Toyota Camrys or Kirkland brand stuff. They're reliable and get the job done, but nobody's writing home about the driving experience or the taste of the vodka. The real fun starts when you stop listening to the crowd and figure out what makes your own fingers happy, even if it gets a little weird.
