Coworker at a coffee shop in Austin had a wild take on public WiFi

I was at a coffee shop in Austin last Tuesday grabbing a latte, and this guy at the next table was arguing with his friend about using the shop's free WiFi. He said he never connects to public networks because it's too easy for someone to sniff your data, and he uses his phone hotspot instead. His friend fired back that VPNs make it totally safe, and everyone does it anyway. Who's right here? Do you guys risk public WiFi or just always hotspot?

Dude, the friend is dead wrong. VPNs help but they ain't a magic shield. Public WiFi is like leaving your front door open and hoping a screen door stops a bear. I've seen too many people get their stuff swiped at coffee shops and libraries because they thought a VPN was all they needed. Your boy with the hotspot is the smart one. Sure, it uses your data plan, but it's way safer than rolling the dice on some random network. I run a business and I tell all my guys to never touch public WiFi for anything important. It's just not worth the headache when someone can easily grab your passwords or bank info.

Public WiFi is like leaving your front door open" - man that's exactly it. I've had to deal with this stuff firsthand when I saw a guy at a Starbucks get his whole email account taken over while he thought his VPN was doing the job. The reality is a VPN hides your traffic from the coffee shop owner or whoever runs the network, but it doesn't stop someone sitting next to you from watching your screen or setting up a fake login page. Tethering off your phone is definitely the safer bet, even if it eats up data. I just tell people straight up, if you don't absolutely need to be on public wifi, don't bother, it's like leaving your wallet on the counter and hoping nobody grabs it.
