I set up a new firewall rule and it blocked my own work computer

Last Thursday, I was trying to lock down my home office network and added a rule to block all traffic from outside the US. I used the geo-IP blocking feature in my Ubiquiti Dream Machine. About an hour later, my work laptop on a VPN kept dropping its connection every few minutes. Turns out, my company's VPN server is based in Ireland, so the firewall was cutting me off! I had to log in from my phone's hotspot to fix the rule. Has anyone else run into problems with geo-blocking being too strict? What's a better way to filter traffic without breaking things I need?

Geo-blocking always seems to backfire like that. I tried blocking a whole country once and it broke a shipping tracker I use all the time because their servers were there. It's a good reminder that the internet is way more connected than it seems. Maybe a better way is to only block specific countries you know are causing trouble, instead of a broad "allow only" list.

Oh man, I feel that! I switched to just blocking the few problem countries and it's been way smoother.
