Passwords vs Passkeys which one actually works better

Been noticing people in here arguing about passwords versus passkeys for months now. I switched my main accounts over to passkeys about 3 weeks ago after that big data leak at my bank. The login is faster for sure but I ran into issues on 2 different sites that didn't support passkeys at all... had to use backup codes instead. Meanwhile my buddy refuses to give up his password manager with 20 char random passwords and says passkeys are just a gimmick. So which side are you on and have you actually run into sites that broke with passkeys?

Passkeys have been smooth for me on every site I've tried, zero issues so far. The whole "some sites don't support them" argument feels like a temporary thing, and I'd rather deal with that than another password reset after a breach. Also, your buddy's 20 character passwords are useless if the site stores them badly, at least passkeys don't even leave my device.

Exactly this. The whole "passkeys don't work everywhere" complaint misses the point that passwords are broken everywhere already. We're comparing a perfect system that doesn't exist yet to a broken system that has been failing us for decades. Once more sites switch over this year and next, that argument dies too. And you nailed it on the password storage thing - even my bank stored passwords in plain text a few years ago, which made my 25 character passphrase completely pointless. Passkeys solve that at the root by never giving the site anything to leak in the first place. The real friction is people refusing to change, not the tech itself.
