Pro tip: your phone's QR scanner is a phishing gateway

I watched my uncle scan a random QR code at a gas station off I-35 last month, and 10 minutes later his email was flooded with login alerts. People treat QR codes like they're invisible, but theyre just shortened links you cant preview. Malwarebytes flagged the payload after the fact, but by then his bank card was already frozen. Has anyone else seen QR scams pop up at restaurants or parking meters?

Think about how QR codes are basically invisible URLs, so treat them like you would a sketchy link from a stranger. Put a sticker over the gas pump scanner or use a dedicated QR app that shows the destination before you open it, that little extra step kills the scam. Even better, just disable auto-open in your camera settings, so you always get a preview instead of getting dumped straight into a phishing page.
