That Tuesday my 2FA app locked me out of my own email at a truck stop in Reno

Sat for 45 minutes in the parking lot of a Pilot in Reno trying to get a verification code from an app that decided to wipe itself after an update, and the recovery email was the same account I was locked out of, so has anyone else had to dig through old SIM card boxes to remember which backup codes they actually saved?

Wished I’d never laughed at my dad for printing out his Google backup codes and taping them to his desk drawer. Used to think that was so old school and paranoid, but after a similar mess with my phone and a lost authenticator, I get it now. Ended up having to call my bank, prove who I was, and wait three days to get back into my own accounts because I’d never saved those stupid codes. That truck stop story is brutal though, at least you had some old SIM boxes to dig through. I’ve got a little notebook in my glovebox now with every backup code written down, ugly but it works. Totally changed my whole take on security stuff, better to be a little extra careful than locked out.
