Pro tip: my $12 flashlight died on the walk home and made me rethink cheap vs pricey EDC
Last Tuesday my $12 pocket light quit on me halfway home from the bus stop in the rain. I had to use my phone to find my keys, and the screen lit up the whole street while I fumbled for 3 minutes. Then a buddy said he's carried the same $70 light for 4 years with zero issues and thinks cheap ones are a false savings. But honestly my old one lasted 2 years, so that's like $6 a year. Where do you all land on cheap EDC that dies versus paying more up front?
The "screen lit up the whole street" part got me because I've absolutely been that guy, standing on my porch at 11pm holding my phone like a tiny floodlight while my dog judges me from the window. Two years out of a $12 light is honestly not bad, that's a couple of coffees per year for the privilege of seeing your own keys. My problem is I lose the cheap ones before they ever get a chance to die, so the math never works out in my favor. The real question is whether you want to gamble on the light dying at a bad moment or just pay once and forget about it. Dying at the bus stop in the rain is pretty much the worst case, so maybe your buddy has a point even if he's annoying about it.
