Found a 1987 map of the USSR that still had Leningrad instead of St. Petersburg
Was digging through a box of old stuff my grandpa left me and pulled out this road atlas where the Soviet Union was still a thing and now I'm wondering how many maps out there still have countries that don't exist anymore lol, has anyone else found one of those weird time capsule maps?

I read this article once about how map companies actually kept updating old Soviet maps well into the 1990s because the demand was still there from people who didn't trust the new borders yet. My uncle was a geography teacher and he had a whole box of these outdated maps, he said some of them showed the USSR and then had handwritten notes in the margins about what the new countries were called. It's kind of wild to think people were literally crossing out "Leningrad" and writing "St. Petersburg" by hand on their dashboards.

Leningrad instead of St. Petersburg" is wild to me. I mean that name change happened in 1991 so that map was basically outdated before the decade even ended. Makes you wonder how many people used it to plan road trips without realizing the whole country was about to fall apart.
