That 1950s globe I grabbed at a garage sale had California as an island...
I had this vintage globe sitting in my living room for about two years before I really looked at it. One night my oldest kid asked why California was floating out in the ocean and I laughed it off at first. Then I actually traced the coastline and realized the whole Baja peninsula was missing. I felt pretty silly that a nine year old spotted it before I did... has anyone else spent years trusting an old map that was totally wrong?

1900s maps still had the Island of California in some atlases.

And that's the thing, once you see one wrong map you start noticing it everywhere. I had an old gas station map from the 70s that showed a highway through the middle of a lake that was supposedly filled in, and I never questioned it until someone pointed out the lake was still there on Google Earth. It's like your brain just accepts old maps as fact because they look official, but really they're just someone's best guess from a hundred years ago with some creative license thrown in. I mean, half the maps from that era had imaginary mountain ranges in Africa just to fill space.
