Why does nobody talk about the $15 reproduction map scam that ruined my gift idea?
I dropped $15 on a "vintage" 1892 map of Chicago from a flea market in Portland, thinking it would be a cool birthday gift for my brother who loves old city plans. Got it home and noticed the paper felt way too smooth and the ink didn't smell like anything, so I looked closer and saw a tiny "printed in 2023" watermark in the corner. Turns out it was just a laser copy of a real map from a library archive, and the seller had like 20 more of them stacked under his table. I basically paid for a fancy poster and wasted a whole Saturday morning hunting for a real find. Has anyone else run into these fake antique maps at markets, and how do you spot them before handing over cash?
