Serious question, did shining my flashlight straight ahead hide more than it showed in the old Burlington in Danville?

Walked the dead Burlington in Danville two nights ago with my light pointing dead ahead the entire time. Kept thinking the place was picked clean until I tripped over a stack of pallets I walked past twice. Turns out angling the beam low and sweeping side to side catches way more, like the dark doorway and the tag on the wall behind me. Picked up a rusted store key on a hook that way. What angle do you all hold your lights when you sweep a wing?
