A farmer in Iowa told me his old 7.3 Powerstroke was 'over-maintained'

He said he'd been changing the oil every 3,000 miles for 20 years, but his neighbor's identical truck on 5,000 mile intervals has fewer injector issues. What's the longest interval you've run on a mechanical diesel without problems?

An old mechanic once said fresh oil too often can wash away protective additives.

That "over-maintained" line hits home. My uncle did the same thing with his old Dodge Cummins, changing fluids like clockwork every 3k, and it was always in the shop for something small. Meanwhile, my dad's work truck would go 7,000 miles on an oil change and just rack up the miles. Sometimes I wonder if being too careful doesn't let the engine properly settle in.

Ever try just following the manual's oil change schedule?
