Bought a $300 borescope after ignoring engine knocks for 6 months and found a cracked piston on the third cylinder.

Turns out that quiet tapping was actually $4,200 in rebuild costs because I waited too long, so now I check every weird noise right away - anyone else get burned by putting off a simple inspection?

Is it really worth jumping into a full teardown over every little noise though? A lot of those knocks work themselves out or end up being something minor like a loose heat shield. I'd argue you got unlucky, but most of the time $300 on a scope and a weekend of stress just finds you a perfectly fine engine making normal sounds.
