Debate: Is an oil analysis actually worth the $30 or just a gimmick?

I had a customer at my shop in Fresno last month who swears by sending his fleet's oil samples to Blackstone every 3,000 miles, but my old mentor said it's a waste unless you're pushing 500k miles. The guy showed me a report that caught a coolant leak 2 weeks before any symptoms showed up, which saved his engine. Has anyone here actually caught a major failure early from oil testing, or is it mostly just peace of mind?

Good point @clairepark, but what about the intervals? You mentioned 3,000 miles in the original post but your neighbor caught that bearing at 180k. Was he testing every oil change or just once in a while? Because if you're doing it every 3k miles over 180k miles, that's 60 tests at $30 each, so $1,800 total. That's still cheaper than a rebuild, sure, but how do you decide when to actually run the test instead of just sending them in every time?

My neighbor runs a small trucking outfit out of Bakersfield and he caught a spun rod bearing at 180k miles from an oil analysis. He said the report showed elevated copper and lead way before any knocking noise showed up. That saved him from a total engine rebuild, which would have cost him way more than the $30 he spent on the test. I'd say if you're planning to keep a vehicle for the long haul, it's a no brainer. Peace of mind is nice but catching something early is the real payoff.
