Just tried rebuilding a 6.7 Powerstroke injector myself and it backfired bad

I thought I'd save $300 by rebuilding my own injectors on my F-250 instead of buying reman ones. Watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials and spent a whole Saturday in the garage pulling them apart and putting them back together. Got them all installed and fired it up, and now cylinder 4 is knocking like crazy and dumping black smoke. Pretty sure I botched the clearance on the spool valve or maybe cross-threaded something. Has anyone else tried this and actually got it to work right or should I just bite the bullet and buy new ones?

honestly I gotta disagree with the whole "just buy remans" thing. I mean, yeah you messed up this time but that doesn't mean the whole idea is bad. Maybe it's just me but I feel like the only way you actually learn this stuff is by breaking things first. Idk, every mechanic I know has a story about the first time they tried something and it went sideways. Plus those "certified" reman injectors aren't exactly perfect either, my buddy got a set from a big name brand and two were bad out of the box. So you're out $1200 and still swapping parts anyway.

Man I did the same thing on my '03 7.3, snapped a bolt head off on the high pressure oil rail and spent a whole weekend drilling it out. Learned way more from that screw up than any youtube video ever taught me.
