Rant: That customer who thinks a laptop can diagnose everything
Had a guy roll into the shop last Tuesday with a 2015 Freightliner that had a dead miss. He swore he'd already diagnosed it with his laptop dongle and told me it just needed an injector. I ran my own tests and found the real problem was a chafed wire harness behind the valve cover. That laptop told him a code but couldn't show him the rubbed-through insulation. Has anyone else had a customer fight you on the actual fix because their scanner told them something different?

And did he stand there watching you pull the valve cover off, still insisting his laptop was right even when you showed him the chafed spot with your own TWO eyes? I swear these guys think OBD codes are gospel instead of starting points. Half the time the scanner picks up a SYMPTOM not the cause, but try explaining that to someone who just spent $300 on a dongle. What do you even say when they start arguing that their cheap reader knows more than twenty years of hands-on experience?
