Spent 6 hours chasing an air leak that was right in front of my face the whole time

Working on a 2015 Cummins ISX this morning at the shop in Tulsa. Truck had a rough idle and kept dying at stop signs. Figured it was a fuel line issue since it only acted up when warm. Pulled the whole top end apart, checked injectors, replaced o-rings, even swapped the lift pump. Six hours later I'm about to throw my tools across the bay when my buddy walks over and points at a tiny crack in the rubber boost hose near the intercooler. That was it. A $30 hose. Has anyone else spent a stupid amount of time on something simple like that?

Pulled a similar all-nighter on my old Ford 7.3 Powerstroke once... turned out the fuel heater housing was cracked and dribbling air in only when the engine got hot. Tore out the whole fuel bowl, new seals, new pump, the whole nine yards... then I found a YouTube video that showed me the exact crack in two minutes. Felt like the biggest idiot in the shop. Sometimes you just gotta walk away and let your buddy save the day, man.

Well, I gotta disagree with you there, Charlie. That YouTube video probably saved you a lot more trouble than you think. You learned the hard way what doesn't work, and now you know that system inside and out. A buddy telling you "hey, check the housing" wouldn't have taught you half of what you learned tearing it all apart.
