That retired fleet mechanic told me to run 15W-40 in my 7.3 all year round...
I live in Wisconsin where it hits negative 10, and he swore cold starts wouldn't be an issue. First real freeze last December I could barely crank the truck over... took three glow plug cycles to get it to fire. Who else has been given advice by an old timer that worked great in one climate but totally flopped in another?

That "ran great down in Texas" advice got my buddy in Minnesota a cracked block last winter. He learned the hard way that old timers know their local weather, not yours.

Man I used to be the guy telling everyone "cold ain't that bad, I ran a straight 40 weight in my truck all winter in Oklahoma". Then I moved up to Wisconsin and cracked my transmission case in February. Completely different world when the wind chill hits thirty below. Those Texas guys mean well but they just don't get it until they've had to scrape ice off the INSIDE of their windshield.
