Tried a different torque sequence on a 6.7 Powerstroke head gasket
Always did the factory pattern, but a guy in a shop in Boise swore by a modified sequence he called the 'star from the center out'. Did it on a rebuild last month and the surface contact looked way more even with my straightedge. Anyone else mess with torque patterns on those engines?

That "star from the center out" pattern sounds like something I'd want to try... I had a buddy who swapped a head on a Cummins and used a criss-cross pattern from the middle, and his torque wrench never clicked as much on one side. He swore the gasket settled in way tighter than any factory spec he'd tried before. Makes you wonder how many factory torque sequences are just "good enough" for the assembly line.

Had a similar experience on a 7.3. The manual sequence left a slight gap on the passenger side rear. Switched to a spiral pattern starting from the middle, working out in a circle. The dye check showed a much better seal. Sometimes the book isn't the final word.
