I swear half the 'speedpaint' videos I see are just people using the smudge tool for 20 minutes straight.

Yeah but a lot of the good ones are using custom brushes for that, not just the basic smudge. It's more like textured blending, you can tell by how the colors mix.

Wait, do custom brushes really make that big of a difference? It just seems like splitting hairs to me. People get way too deep into the tools instead of just making art. At the end of the day, it's all just moving pixels around on a screen.
