Is showing process shots more important than the final piece?

I read a post where a veteran artist said they never share their sketches because people only care about the finished work, but another digital painter I follow always posts every layer breakdown. It got me thinking about what actually drives engagement in this community. Do you think viewers value the journey more than the destination when it comes to digital art?

Had a buddy who did this huge cyberpunk piece. He posted the raw messy sketch with ugly blocky colors and people lost their minds in the comments. Everyone was begging to see how he cleaned it up. But when he posted the final, super polished version a week later? Crickets. Barely 20 likes. @the_mia is right about the glow up thing being the hook, but it seems like people enjoyed figuring out how he got there more than the actual destination. The journey built hype the final product couldn't match.
