My color grading workflow changed after one gallery visit

I used to crank saturation on every piece I posted, thinking it made them pop. Last month at a small show in Portland, a painter pointed out that my shadows were all crushed and muddy, and that's when I realized I was hiding my own line work. Do you trust your monitor's calibration or do you rely on print proofs to judge your digital pieces?

Trust my monitor calibration? That thing's been lying to me for years, like my bathroom scale. Print proofs are the only way I find out my shadows look like a crime scene. But hey, at least the painter showed me my lines were worth saving, even if my eyesight isn't.
