My digital painting of a cat looked fine until I realized I'd been working on the wrong layer for 3 hours straight.
I finally noticed when I tried to erase a stray line and nothing happened, so has anyone else had a layer mix-up that cost them a huge chunk of time?

I always rename my layers now after losing a whole afternoon to that. I'll name them "cat fur final" or "background trees" so it's obvious. Setting a bright color for the active layer outline in the software settings helps too.

Oh man, that reminds me of something I read on a design blog a while back. The person writing it said they use a kind of simple code in their layer names, like putting "DONE" or "FINAL" in caps, but then they also add a date. So it's like "cat fur final 0315" or whatever. I guess it helps them know when they last touched it and if it's actually the most recent one. I've been meaning to try something like that myself, maybe with just numbers instead of words. It's way too easy to end up with a dozen layers all called "Layer 1 copy 3" and have no clue which one is the good version.
