Rant: My art teacher told me to stop using pure black in my digital shading, I ignored her for 2 months and now I get it

Back in September my digital painting teacher said to swap pure black for dark purples and blues in my shadows, and I thought she was just being picky about style. I kept slapping #000000 into every corner of my pieces until last week, when I pulled up my old work next to a new piece and the black one looked flat and dead next to it. So what's the go-to shadow color you all use, or do you just keep a black layer at low opacity and call it a day?
