Shoutout to the guy at the Columbus art fair who roasted my whole portfolio in 4 minutes
I was showing my digital stuff at an art fair in Columbus two weeks ago and this guy stops at my booth, looks at my tablet for maybe 90 seconds, and goes "these all look like the same piece with different colors." At first I wanted to be mad, but then he pulls up my gallery on his phone and he's right, every single one was a centered figure on a gradient background. He wasn't even trying to be mean, he just said "you found one thing that works and you stopped taking risks." Now every time I open Procreate I hear his voice and I freeze up a little, which is both annoying and probably good for me. How do you all push past that phase where you built one style and got scared to break it?
That guy basically gave you a free art school critique in 4 minutes, and the part that sticks out is his timing. 90 seconds then 4 minutes of talking. Most people at fairs walk past in 10 seconds, so the fact he stopped at all means your work caught him. The trap you are in now is treating his words like a rule instead of a tool. What worked for me was a dumb drawing exercise, take one piece and change just one thing, the figure goes off center, or the gradient becomes flat gray, or you draw it at 4x the size. Do like 10 of those in a week and you stop hearing his voice because you have new problems to think about instead. He is not the judge of your art, he is just some dude with an eye and the guts to say it out loud.
