Someone on Reddit pointed out my art was too dark and it actually helped

Saw a comment from a guy named PixelPete42 in a thread about digital painting tips. He said my sky looked like it was from a horror movie even though I was going for a sunset. At first I was mad but then I looked at my value chart and he was right. I bumped up the midtones and added some warm yellows and the piece felt way more alive. Has anyone else had a random stranger's feedback totally change how you see your own work?

WAIT dude you got critiqued by PixelPete42?! No way. I know that guy's tutorials on YouTube, he's legit brutal but always right. I had a similar thing happen but with color temperature. Someone in a discord told me my shadows were all the same temp and I was like pfft whatever. Then I actually made my shadows cooler and my lights warmer and it was like MAGIC how much volume everything got. It's weird how someone just saying the right thing at the right moment can unlock something in your brain.

Hang on though, sometimes that kind of feedback can mess up your natural style if you take it too literally. That horror movie sky might have been what makes your work stand out from the millions of boring sunsets everyone else paints. Not every piece needs to look warm and inviting, you know? If I listened to every random internet commenter my old truck would still be parked in my yard like they told me to junk it, but it runs fine.

That "unlock something in your brain" part from sage52 is key. Nobody's talking about timing. You can get the best advice in the world but if you hear it before you're ready it just sounds like noise. Like I tried to learn guitar from tabs at 14 and gave up. Picked it up again at 30 and suddenly it clicked. Same advice, different brain. Your horror movie sky might be bad for someone else's painting but exactly right for where YOU are right now. Keep making those weird skies. You'll know when the advice matters.
