Tried Illustrator's pen tool for the first time in 2 years and my hand drawn curves were straight up better
I spent 3 hours last Saturday trying to trace a simple leaf shape with the pen tool and it looked like a crumpled receipt, so I gave up and just drew it freehand with a brush in 10 minutes. The freehand version had way more life to it and my buddy said it looked like an actual leaf instead of a geometry homework problem. Do you guys trace with the pen tool or just wing it with brushes?
The crumpled receipt thing got me lol, I know that pain way too well. Every time I try to pen tool something organic it comes out looking like a robot tried to draw a potato. I've fully switched to just blocking in shapes with a big brush and cleaning up edges with eraser later, way faster and the lines keep that hand feel. The pen tool is great for logos and clean stuff but for anything living it just kills the vibe.
