DMV lady might not be the most reliable source either.

Right, saying the DMV lady isn't the most reliable source, that really hits the nail on the head honestly. Those workers deal with hundreds of people a day and probably get a lot of questions wrong or just give a quick answer to get you out of there. Plus they don't have to live with the consequences if their advice is bad, we do. It's kind of scary how much weight people put on a random comment from someone who might not even know the full rules. I've definitely taken bad advice from a clerk before and it cost me time and money to fix it. So yeah, I'd say your gut feeling not to trust her completely is probably the smart move.
